Foster Wilson Architects is delighted to be working with the Ovalhouse Theatre to design their new home in the centre of Brixton. The new building will provide two new studio theatres and five flexible studio spaces capable of hosting a wide range of theatre productions, rehearsals, classes and community events.
There will be a large foyer with café and bar that fronts onto both Coldharbour Lane and Somerleyton Road, providing a public space for people to meet throughout the day. The building will be fully wheelchair accessible and incorporates a number of environmental benefits, including natural ventilation and a biodiversity green roof with solar panels. Creative workspaces will be provided on the top two floors of the building with surrounding terraces, and connection will be provided to further creative workspaces in Carlton Mansions. The whole structure is designed as a robust working space where performance, rehearsal, production and conversation inter-mingle and overlap.
The new Ovalhouse theatre is close to the site of the old Brixton Theatre on Coldharbour Lane that was destroyed by a bomb in the Second World War. We are very excited to be designing a new theatre in the heart of Brixton that fills an important gap in the cultural life of the community and will be open for everyone to enjoy.
