Mander and Mitchenson Theatre Collection

Client: The Raymond Mander & Joe Mitchenson Theatre Collection

Year: 2001 Budget: £65,000

Foster Wilson Architects advised the trustees in their search for a new home for this important collection of theatre documents and memorabilia. After assessing a number of possible buildings, it was agreed to relocate the archive to a space within the new home of Trinity College of Music at the King Charles Building, Greenwich, a Grade I listed building which forms part of the Greenwich World Heritage site.

Basic infrastructure work to the new library had already been completed and we were responsible for the fitting out of a space approximately 26m x 6m on the second floor of Trinity College of Music to house the collection. The work included the design and installation of purpose made shelving, furniture and lighting for the archive, together with an office area for the administrator. We were also responsible for negotiations with English Heritage. The Mander and Mitchenson Library, together with the Trinity College Music Library, formed the Jerwood Library for the Performing Arts. Today, the Mander and Mitchenson Collection is part of the University of Bristol Theatre Collection.
