Foster Wilson Architects was appointed in 2007 to prepare proposals for remodelling Linacre Theatre. As part of Wigan & Leigh College the theatre needed to provide a venue for use by the college and the wider community. The auditorium, created within the shell of the existing theatre, provided a flexible galleried space that could be reconfigured to a range of stage layouts, utilising the fly tower of the original building. The proposal included the creation of dressing rooms and a workshop. The scheme was developed to RIBA Stage E before being abandoned in 2008 due to the college’s decision to seek university status.
