Client: The Gardner Arts Centre

Year: 2004

In 2004 Foster Wilson Architects was appointed to prepare a Conservation Statement for this important Grade II* listed building, originally designed by Sir Basil Spence in 1969 as part of the University of Sussex campus. In 2005 the practice prepared a full Conservation Management Plan to support an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund, together with a Design Brief and preliminary design proposals. This work analyses the particular significance of the building, both as part of the group of important Spence buildings at the University and in the context of his wider oeuvre. It examines how the building can be sympathetically restored to bring its services and fabric up to modern standards, and adapted to meet the centre’s future needs. The building comprises of an auditorium, art gallery, art studios and meeting rooms, a cafe bar and administrative offices.
