Foster Wilson Architects was appointed in 2011 to develop proposals for a new theatre extension to the listed Sutherland House, which houses the University’s Department of Drama & Theatre. The extension, which replaces an existing studio theatre, provides a flexible galleried studio theatre with a seating capacity of 175, two rehearsal studios, a workshop and dressing rooms, linked to the existing house by a single storey glazed foyer link. Completed in 2013, the extension makes use of natural light to enhance the students experience throughout and the extension is an apsidal brick building to achieve a high level of acoustic isolation due to its proximity to a main road and Heathrow flight path.
